English Mou Mou’s OAEP (Optimal Academic English Program)
- What Is the OAEP (Optimal Academic English Program)?
- Globalization and technological development have lead to the global demand and drive to learn English.
Today’s society not only needs knowledge and problem solving capabilities based on creative and critical
thinking skills, but also the ability to express and communicate what one knows. With the purpose of raising
global talents, English Mou Mou has developed English programs tailored to Korea’s EFL (English as a Foreign
Language) environments. The programs are designed to produce the best possible learning outcomes by
enabling learners to read extensively based on their individual pronunciation, grammar, reading, writing
and vocabulary levels. Instead of repetitive rote learning, the program is developed to facilitate self-directed
learning based on creative and critical thinking skills. In collaboration with teachers and professors with over
20 years experience in the education field, the OAEP by English Mou Mou provides programs tailored to each
learner’s level and delivers the best English learning result.
- Structure and Principle of Mou Mou OAEP
-
All languages are systematic, composed of sounds and letters, and designed for effective communication.
In short, language has rules and functions.
The Mou Mou OAEP enables learners to understand the rules and functions of language, and learn English
by comparing these rules and functions to Korean.
-
Systematic language has rules established by its users.
Speakers, listeners, writers and readers must abide by rule,
these rules, which are called "Syntax and Grammar". -
In a broad sense, syntax and grammar are the same. However, in a narrow sense, syntax refers to rules which govern listening and speaking, and grammar refers to rules for reading and writing. With the Mou Mou OAEP, learners are introduced to the key principles of syntax and grammar.
Syntax in English covers English phonemes, syllables, stress, and accents, and grammar deals with word location, parts of speech, phrases, passages, and special sentences Since these components are very different from those of Korean, accurate communication becomes difficult without a clear understanding of them. Also, communication should be understood as the interplay of the components of systematic language, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. That is, communication is achieved by combining elements of spoken language and written language. For example, listening and reading skills enable comprehension, and speaking and writing skills enable expression of one’s thoughts.
- Fluent communication in English involves understanding the
rules English-speakers abide by. -
However, most English education thus far has not covered the distinct aspect of English.
If the focus was placed on syntax and grammar, then instruction on communication was weak.
If communication was emphasized, then learners did not follow the rules of language accurately.
Thus, the so-called pendulum phenomenon, an -imbalance between spoken language (listening, speaking, pronunciation, syntax) and written language (reading, writing, grammar), occurs in English learning.
To balance English learning, The Mou Mou OAEP is developed systematically to address and overcome this imbalance.
